Exploration. 1901 British National Antarctic Expedition. This expedition was the first British expedition to the continent of Antarctica. It was under the leadership of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the Royal Naval captain who with 2 companions would die heroically on their return from their trip to the South Pole on the 1911-12 expedition. A series of 4 postcards were produced by Wrench, which were sold to the public to provide funding for the expedition. Each card was handstamped with the official expedition cachet and this is the only correspondence to bear this cachet. They were to be mailed from ports en route to Antarctica. Card no. 1, with vignette views of Scott and "Discovery" and facsimile signature of Scott, posted London on July 31 1901. Corner creases and a little soiled, but rare. (See photo) (F) £70
