1842 (4 May) entire letter from Captain John James Onslow, R.N. in Yarmouth to Captain Hamilton R.N., Private Secretary, Admiralty, London; with interesting contents, including "..... but I hope you will make his Lordship aware, that I was selected for a most delicate service, "the retaking of the Falkland Islands", a service which Wm 4 (sic) & Snr. T. Hardy, were pleased to say, had been performed with great judgement; and if it had not been for the peculiar position it placed our government, & the Argentine Republic, who protested against our proceedings, I should have been honoured by a mark of distinction;...". The entire bearing Great Britain 1841 1d. (faults) with Maltese Cross cancellation and with Yarmouth/Norfolk datestamp on reverse; fine and a fascinating letter of historical significance. 1858 (8 Sept.) envelope to "The Revd. J.F. Ogle, Patagonian Mission, East Falklands", bearing Great Britain 1847-54 embossed 1/- green with London "19" Inland Section barred oval cancellation and with despatch datestamp on reverse; endorsed "Received Dec. 11th by the AG" (The Schooner Allen Gardiner), fine. Believed to be one of the earliest recorded letters to the Falkland Islands and accompanied by an interesting article by Major Spafford concerning the Reverend J. F. Ogle and the Patagonian mission.
