Panel also bears a 'Free' postmark. Affixed to a same-sized card with hinging remnants to reverse. In fine condition, with trimmed edges and some scattered toning and soiling. Accompanied by RR Auction Certificate of Authenticity. [Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington was a British soldier and statesman and one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century. Wellesley's battle record is exemplary, ultimately participating in some 60 battles throughout his military career. Signed boldly 'Emile Zola', annotated in French and dedicated to 'W. William Forbes' in fountain pen ink, diagonally across the top left corner. The photograph has been cut down along the left and lower edge, otherwise good condition. Accompanied by 13.5x20.5 cm (approx.) unsigned, incomplete, handwritten letter, undoubtedly written in Zola's hand. In French throughout, partly translated Zola makes profuse apologies for not being able to meet a certain 'monsieur' in London and makes reference to 'madame Zola'. Letter laid down on card, dated 'Paris, 3 Oct. 93'. Some original ink spotting, smudges and splatters, in good condition. [Emile Zola was a French writer, the most well-known practitioner of the literary school of naturalism. A major figure in the political liberalisation of France and in the exoneration of the falsely accused army officer Alfred Dreyfus. [Montgomery commanded the 8th Army from August 1942 until the final Allied victory in Tunisia. Annotated to the reverse of the image in Montgomery's hand, in bold pencil, 'Taken during a parade at Tripoli just after it's capture by the Eighth Army: January 1943' With an official War Office photograph credit stamp to the verso, below the annotation, indicating that the image has been passed for publication. In fine condition. [Commanded the Eighth Army in Sicily and Italy before being given responsibility for planning the D-Day invasion in Normandy. In very good condition, with a couple of corner creases, and some light toning and wrinkling.
