The photograph has been cut down along the left and lower edge, otherwise good condition. Accompanied by 13.5x20.5 cm (approx.) unsigned, incomplete, handwritten letter, undoubtedly written in Zola's hand. In French throughout, partly translated Zola makes profuse apologies for not being able to meet a certain 'monsieur' in London and makes reference to 'madame Zola'. Letter laid down on card, dated 'Paris, 3 Oct. 93'. Some original ink spotting, smudges and splatters, in good condition. [Emile Zola was a French writer, the most well-known practitioner of the literary school of naturalism.
