RARE ENVELOPE FLOWN ON THE ATTEMPT TO FLY FROM FRANCE TO AUSTRALIA BY E POULET AND J BENOIST: 1919 (14 Oct) env from Banda Abas to Karachi bearing India 4a 2p tied by a clear "BANDA ABBAS" d.s. of 8 Nov. 1919, red m/s "Per Kind Favour of M Paulet" (faded) and two strikes of the violet "PAR POSTE D' AIR/PAR FAVOEUR DE/M POULET" h.s. with another on reverse. The flight was abandoned at Moulmein in Burma. A little damp effected and small corner tear. One of the rarest of pioneer air mail covers with only 8 examples recorded. An opened out env. from London to Melbourne bearing a fine Ross Smith "FIRST/AERIAL POST/ENGLAND-AUSTRALIA" stamp and Australian 11/2d tied by very fine oval "FIRST AERIAL MAIL/RECEIVED/26 FEB 1920/GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA" cancellations. Two vertical folds well clear of all adhesives a small portion of one flap missing. Only 13 covers are recorded with additional Australian adhesives. K Ceremuga Cert (2000). AAMC 27 cover no. 157. "THE "WAR CHEST" FUND/N.S.W DIVISION/A.C.F." envelope headed in m/s "On Active Service" from London to Thornleigh, N.S.W. with (on reverse) a fine Ross Smith "FIRST/AERIAL POST/ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA" stamp tied by a clear oval "FIRST AERIAL MAIL/RECEIVED/26FEB 1920/GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA" d.s. The reverse signed "J M Bennett/Darwin/12. 12 19" and "Keith Smith". The reverse is also endorsed "Not for publication/R Roberts/Aust Wireless". NE & TF record 26 "O.A.S" covers, these were passed to N.D. MacEwen and flown to Bagdad in a Handley Page J1936 ("Old Carthusian") whilst on route to India. Ross Smith carried the mail to London for inclusion in the England -Australia flight. NE & TF only record 7 covers with more than one signature. Some creasing and a small tear at top just touching Bennett signature. The writing is a little faded. Despite this, one of the rarest of the Ross Smith covers. Litchfield" and "T H McWilliams" with "Southern Cross" below. There are no postal markings or adhesives. Vertical fold and other small faults. A rare item being one of 15 covers carried. THE "COFFEE ROYAL" EPISODE - A RARE FLOWN COVER:1929 (30 March) env from Richmond addressed to "Letter delivered to/Sir Hugo Hirst Bart/40 Park Lane London" with "Through the Kindness of Squadron Commander/Kingsford Smith and Flight Lieutenant/Ulm on the Southern Cross flight/from Sydney to London March 1929". Unstamped but with a clear "RICHMOND/10.30A 30MR29" c.d.s. Also included is the original letter dated 1 March 1929 which again mentions the method of letter transport. Note: The Southern Cross left was lost on route to England in N.W. Western Australia due to lack of fuel. The crew survived on baby food, coffee & brandy from which the incident took its name. He was taken ill and stopped on route in Milas (Asia Minor), Athens (where he remained under medical attention for 4 day). On 7 October he flew the final leg from Rome to London.
