(with contents headed "Steam Ship Persia...gale from south, rain") to Berkhampstead (partial backstamp) via Liverpool (fine 20 Sept. backstamp) with G.B. 1d Red 'Stars' (crease and corner faults) tied by a very fine rare "A96" Transatlantic Mailboat Numeral used on the Cunard S.S. 'Persia' en route from New York ("We left New York on the 10th") to Queenstown. The writer notes that he had planned to travel on the SS 'Great Eastern' but that she had been wrecked off Long Island (on 27 Aug. 1862) when she "made a hole some 83 feet long" in her outer hull but did not sink. Australasian" (endorsement on reverse; the writer had just arrived from Liverpool on that ship; this letter was taken to the SS China that was just about to leave the port) exceptionally addressed to Naples (boxed backstamp) via London (26 May backstamp) with G.B. 6d Lilac (pl.6) cancelled by a light but recognisable very rare "B61" Transatlantic Mailboat Numeral, used on the Cunard S.S. 'China' en route from New York; charged "10" on arrival with a superb rare "PAID-ONLY/TO ENGLAND" mark on the front. PENINSULAR WAR - CAMPAIGN LETTER WITH GREEN FALMOUTH "LISBON/F" D.S., ETC.; Fine 4/7 June 1810 EL from a British officer at "Pinhel" (in Portugal near the Spanish border, near Ciudad Rodrigo, part way from Oporto to Madrid) to his wife in England "per Packet" and so charged "2/4" with a very fine green "LISBON/JU 22/1810/F" d.s. nicely placed on the front; the contents criticize Napoleon's ambition ("their Tyrant will have his own way") and tells of increasing numbers of French deserters; "We get every day deserters from the French; 25 yesterday, 10 today; I believe they are heartily sick of fighting...". Plus fine 30 Oct. 1800 EL from "LISBON" (v. fine early British Packet office mark) to G.B. with contents ref. hopes of a "Convention with France similar to that of America soon being arranged" and extolling the virtues of Portugal for trade "due to our safety [we are not apprehensive] of an invasion from Spain, nor from the epidemic disorder at Cadiz & Seville...". ARCHER PERFORATION 1d RED ON COVER WITH 2d BLUE; Fine and attractive 10 Sept. 1854 env. to Epsom "Per French Packet From Black Sea Fleet" and so with G.B. 1d Red 'Stars' and 2d Blue 'Stars' tied (on arrival in London) by a single light "48 48" Twin Numeral, also having a mainly very fine large blue "POST OFFICE/BRITISH ARMY" c.d.s. on the reverse, the 1d Red also being tied by the edge of the blue "EPSOM" arrival c.d.s.; the 1d Red - most extraordinarily - has the Henry Archer Experimental Perforation (16) and is from Plate 98. (slight stain along left -hand edge of address side) with contents (in English; from one "Baldwin Bastard" to his brother) headed from "Camp before Sebastopol, 3rd Division" but addressed to "Rome" (red 12 Jan. 1855 arrival backstamp matching the very fine red "VIA DI MARE" mark on the front) endorsed "Officer's letter from the Crimea" on the front and most unusually having no British Army P.O. mark but having a 25% strike (partly off the edge) of the French Naval P.O. 2-ring "ESCADRE DE MEDITERRANEE" c.d.s. on the front. Bellerophon, Black Sea Fleet, J[ohn]. J.B.E. F[reere]." franked by G.B. 1d Red 'Stars' (pl.179) tied by mainly fine (for this) "*[Crown]*" Cypher Numerals of the British ARmy P.O. with a partly fine blue "POST OFFICE/[BRITISH] ARMY" c.d.s. (15 Sept.) on the reverse. Good contents describing progress towards the Russian coast between Sebastopol and Odessa, with mention of other ships; "...this morning the Agamemnon cast us off and the Niger took us in tow. The Agamemnon has gone with the Curadoe [?] (Lord Raglan being on board...". Good Campaign item from the first arrival of the British forces. [RPS 1994 cert.] Attractive and rare. CANCELS; Attractive 21 July 1856 env. to Southampton "via Marseilles" franked for the single 3d rate by a Vertical Strip of Three 1d Red 'Stars' (minor perf. stains in places) tied by two exceptionally fine "0*0" Cancels in BLUE ink leaving the profile of the Queen's head clear on two stamps (and almost clear on the third). Unusually also endorsed "Syria" below the address; was this the name of the merchant ship on which the writer was located at the time? Rare colour for this cancel and an unusually fine cover. (opened out for display; one flap slightly reduced) to Dublin endorsed "Paper only" and "On Active Service" with a superb 2-ring "FIELD POST OFFICE/P.B.66" c.d.s. on the front, but also franked (on the reverse) by Russia 5k(3) + 10k (3; one with rubbed perfs. where slightly over the edge) with G.B. KGV 1/2d Green Pair all tied by mainly very fine strikes of the same "P.B.66" c.d.s.'s; there is also a very fine "PASSED BY CENSOR/[Crown]/No.54R" on the front. (some wear etc.) from "[HMS] Octavia, Aden" (filing note on the front) to London "Via Southampton" franked by G.B. 6d Lilac (pl.5; slight stain at top) just tied by a mainly very fine rare brown "A82" Mailboat Numeral struck on board the P&O SS Euxine en route across the Mediterranean, with a v. fine red London c.d.s. (10 June) on the front. [One of the rarer Mailboat Numerals; an example on a 1d Red on piece sold for £575 at auction in 2007.] Plus a matching 11 Dec. 1867 env. from the same correspondence from "[HMS] Star, Aden" with G.B. 6d (pl.5; cut margin) just tied by an unclear Numeral (presumably a Mailboat cancel). Click to view full image... "PAID/AT/BAHAMAS" CROWNED CIRCLE GOVERNOR-SIGNED COVER TO CUBA WITH CONTENTS REF. R.M.S.P. STEAMERS, ETC.; 9 Mar. 1850 env. (some edge-wear and slight scuffing) from "Govt. House, Nassau" endorsed "Post paid" to the "British Consulate, Havana" with red manuscript "1/-" and a mainly very fine rare red 2-ring "PAID/AT/BAHAMAS" Crowned Circle nicely placed on the front; there is also a mainly fine Bahamas "A"-code c.d.s. (23 Mar.!) on the flap. The address-panel and letter are signed by the Governor (1849-53) "J[.]. Gregory". The letter mentions that "The total stoppage of communications by Steamers is most perplexing. I have written to the Home Govt. mist strongly urging the necessity of their prompt interference. The conduct of the R.M.S.P. Company is alike embarrassing and incomprehensible."! Rare destination and intriguing contents. [With 1995 RPS cert.] PHOTO - see page 16. £500
