Walton Temple(1921-2014)The varied nature of the Walton Temple Collection shows the eclectic interests of a man who spent his working life with ships and ship building in the North-East. Walton Temple's career was typical of those of his generation. As a young man he served in the Merchant Navy and upon release he returned to the North-East where he spent the rest of his career with Swan Hunter on Tyneside. Famous for ships such as the Blue Riband liner, RMS Mauretania and battleship HMS Anson, Swan Hunter's reputation was widespread. As an engineering manager and member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Walton Temple's work with Swan Hunter took him to many corners of the globe solving engineering problems on ships. We are able to follow Walton Temple's passion for collecting as many of the purchase receipts for items in his collection survive. His first acquisitions include many of the items of 18th and early 19th century creamware with printed maritime subjects. Later his interest developed towards glass and Continental porcelain, especially Meissen perhaps as a result of influence from his sister with whom he was very close. The majority of his finds or "loot" as he used to call them were purchased from well known London shops or at London antique fairs. His later acquisitions were the enamels and St James's scent bottles which show a technical excellence and are akin to his collecting style, reflecting his connoisseurship and good taste. He loved to show off the items he had bought and used to say that he had only a lease on his treasures and that on his death he wished them to be sold so others could enjoy them as he had done.CeramicsPlease Note: Catalogue descriptions indicate major damage, repair and/or restorations.
