1914 Munster Fusiliers Distinguished Conduct Medal to 8044 Sjt J. Brooks 2/R Muns Fus 2 small edge knocks, about very fine. Joseph Brooks' DCM was announced in the London Gazette dated 30th June 1915 "For conspicuous gallantry in the vicinity of Festubert between the 21st and 23rd December 1914, when he carried a message back from the Officer commanding the battalion, who was wounded, which greatly assisted in enabling the dispositions of the Battalion to be located. Subsequently on various occasions he displayed great gallantry and initiative in leading a scouting party and in the collection and rescue of wounded men, being the whole time under very heavy fire." He was subsequently killed in action with the 2nd Bn during the Battle of Aubers Ridge on 9th May 1915 and with no known grave is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. The Munsters suffered heavily, losing some 381 dead. With copied CWGC, Soldiers Died and MIC, entered France 28/8/14, born Cardiff, lived Tylorstown. Only 66 DCMs to the regiment for WWI.
