Provenance:
By repute, this chair was one of two chairs commissioned by the Leicester architectural firm of Stockton Harrison, then passed to Symington, Prince & Pike circa 1953 following company merger, and finally to the firm of Candlish & Kind from where it was acquired by the current owner.

An unusual Cherrywood chair by The Russell Workshops for the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, circa 1932, to a design by Elizabeth Scott, with curved twin-bar back, drop in seat, out-swept supports, applied label ‘The Russell Workshops Ltd./ Broadway/ Worcestershire’, depth 49.5cm, height 73cm
This unusual design was designed by the architect Elizabeth Scott for the then re-designed Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, in 1932. The Russell workshops executed the furniture designs in a variety of woods for use in the restaurants and foyer.

This design is similar to a pair of cabinets designed for Mrs. E. Hibberd and executed in Rosewood, in 1967. This example comes with the additional lower bracket. The original design can be seen in the exhibition catalogue ‘Edward Barnsley, 60 Years of Furniture Design and Cabinet Making’ fig.73, held at The Fine Art Society and the Holborne Museum, Bath in 1982.
