x 1d. on 5pf. green, Setting 1 Position 2, being the second stamp on the second row each of 10 single stamps - all the others are German New Guinea 6mm. Setting S.G. 2 - all "tacked" (and subsequently affixed) to a piece of paper "blanket" for the purpose of overprinting, the last position having been left blank causing "g.r.i./1d." to be printed on the "blanket", stamps at positions 4, 9, 14 and 19 of the "block" of nineteen all show the variety "1" with straight top serif; a few minor blemishes not affecting the critical stamp and in no way detracting from the importance and appeal of this amazing item. Believed to be the largest known "block". Extremley rare and extraordinary exhibition piece. Gibbs Certificate (2009). S.G. 64d/2/2c. Photo £6,000-8,000 Literature: For explanation of the printing process, see "G.R.I." by Robert Gibbs, pages 5-6 Provenance: The Marquess of Bute, April 1959 "Ello", March 2009 |

Very rare. Photo £1,500-1,800Japanese Occupation of Marshall IslandsOverall these overprints are considered to have had more of a propaganda character, rather than postal. They are believed to have been initially produced for use on mail by the German population etc (Japanese proclamation in October 1914 specifically permitted sending of mail to anywhere in the world, free to Japan), but mail privilages were quickly withdrawn by order of higher authorities (December 1914). No postal usage is recorded as surviving, so either no mail was actually despatched in initial period, or more likely it was all seized in transit to Japan, or otherwise lost |
