Note: Roger Casement was knighted for his work, when with the Consular Service, in exposing atrocities within the Belgian Congo and Peru. He was stripped of his knighthood and hanged for treason in 1916 for attempting to recruit Irish prisoners of war in Germany for an Irish Brigade in the Republican cause.
