No lotsThe Kagan Chess CollectionJOSEPH LORD KAGAN was born of Jewish parents, textile manufacturers in Lithuania in 1915. Having survived the Nazi persecution of the Jews during the 2nd World War he with his wife Margaret arrived in England and set up Kagan Textiles in 1951. He eventually made his fortune with Gannex, the fearsome fabric used by police forces and made popular by Prime Minister Harold Wilson with whom he became very friendly. His generous financial contributions to Wilson's office ensured his knighthood in 1970 and peerage in 1976. He fell from grace however when convicted of theft from his company in Elland in 1980, fined £325,000 and sentenced to ten months in prison. |
