A rare Kerr & Binns bone china plate from the "Shakespeare Service", the border with raised Renaissance ornament, three reserve panels painted with portraits of Shakespeare by Luke Wells and Thalia (Comedy) and Melpomene (Tragedy) by Thomas Bott, on a dotted gold ground, the centre with a classical head in gilt surrounded by stars, 9.5ins diameter (impressed factory mark - typical stress cracks) £700-900
Note: This famous and important service was executed for the Dublin Exhibition of 1853 specifically to appeal to the Irish nobility and gentry. William Boynton Kirk, a young Dublin Sculptor, was engaged to model the service while Bott & Wells were employed to paint the reserve panels. The majority of the surviving pieces of this service are cracked or broken due probably to the occurrence of killinite in the feldspar discovered on Killiney Hill which was used on this occasion for the bone china recipe.
