1840 One Penny Black

Plate Ia

1
x TL in an intense black colour from an early impression, varieties no ray flaw and shifted transfer at foot showing distinct doubling of "one penny", good to large, even margins, unused with some gum. A very attractive and appealing example of this stamp in an unusually deep shade from the first plate with well balanced margins. R.P.S. Certificate (1985). S.G. Spec. AS1ac, £22,000+ £3,000

Plate III

2
x OC in black, with good to very large margins, unused with traces of original gum; a fine and attractive example of this plate. S.G. Spec. AS20, £19,500 £2,000

1840 Two Pence Blue

Plate 1

3
x FC in a blue shade approaching steel blue, good to large margins all round; unused and regummed. A fine example of this scarce stamp and the freshness gives it great visual appeal. R.P.S. Certificate (1984). S.G. Spec. DS5, £35,000 £4,000

1841 Two Pence Blue

Plate 4

4
x AH in a full blue shade, large to very large margins; with gum and hinge remainders and showing a non-constant blue line across the upper right corner (hair on the printing plate?). Very fresh printing and rich colour makes this a very fine looking stamp, ready to grace any collection. S.G. ES14, £6000 £2,000

Plate 4

5
x QB in pale blue, close to very large margins, unused with full original gum (unmounted); a trivial gum wrinkle at top does not detract from this stamp of stunning quality. It is rare to find examples with genuine full gum, especially when unmounted. B.P.A. Certificate (1961) for an original split block £2,000
Provenance: Howard Gibralter, February 1996

Plate 4

6

Provenance: Howard Gibralter, February 1996
7
