Autograph Collection. A wide ranging and varied collection dating at least partly from the 1970s & 80s and perhaps earlier, appealing to a previous generation! They feature stars and performers from Film, Theatre and other forms of Stage entertainment. The autographs appear mainly on monochrome photographs or programmes. The collection is presented in a variety of formats - a wallet folder ( featuring stage production programmes signed by the cast - one example being 'Present Laughter' by Noel Coward ), others are photographs mounted on a board and a larger number loosely in envelopes. Fourteen Folio qtr. bound volumes containing manuscript copies of Solicitor's correspondence ( 'Letter Book' ) from the 19th.Century. Subjects dealt with reveal a remarkable variety and range from the mundane and routine to those which provide a more detailed insight into domestic and business life of the time : '' As to health, would it be an answer to prove she is delicate? She is one of those white faced girls who are subject to fainting fits. Otherwise she looks a strong girl. She admits she is subject to fainting fits in hot rooms. Her mother confirms this.''.......''As another year of your youngest brother's apprenticeship has expired we shall be glad to know if you and the other members of the family wish the apprenticeship to continue. When some of your sisters were at home last Xmas we understand that they were very dissatisfied with his progress. In one way, judging from his appearance, he certainly does not make much progress.'' ..... ''My Articled Clerk has to serve for 2 months longer before his articles expire. he would like to have some experience of London practice. Will you give him a seat in your office for the next two months?''.......''The next day he told Mr. Morrell he should not carry out the contract because one of the houses has not a bay window. The mistake is very annoying as the matter is sufficiently complicated without further difficulties.'' All life is here! Detailed shorthand manuscript record of a variety of cases appearing before the magistrates including : Selling sausages above the maximum price and containing an excess percentage of regulated meat content, fined 5/-; Exceeding speed limit, fined £1.16/- Supplying motor fuel without licence, fined £3; In charge of motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, Fined £3; Light escaping from building, fined £2; Stealing potatoes, fined 15/- ; Failing to comply with land cultivation order, Fined £5. ( It should be noted that a large number of the cases are to be understood in the context of war time exigencies - reading the volume is almost an educational tour of the social environment of the UK at this time ). Film,Music and Theatrical Autograph Album, C.1930s/40s. Album containing the autographs of a range of actors, actresses, musicians, conductors, entertainers and nobility, sometimes with additional goodwill comments or musical notation with words. Individuals featured include : Sybil Thorndike, Thomas Beecham, Sandy McPherson, Charles Groves, Duke of Bedford, Charles Groves, Louis Kentner, Gilbert Harding, Clementine, Randolph & Sarah Churchill, Carl Dometsch, Yehudi Menuhin, Henry Wood, Myra Hess, Adrian Boult, John Laurie, Marie Goosens, Gerald Moore. Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh and John Gielgud feature with autographed portrait photographs. Other signatures are from complete string quartets. There are also a number of other indecipherable signatures which have an ostentatious flourish and may therefore be significant! Finally some pages also feature miniature watercolours, sketches and portraits together with a hand-embroidered silk of H.M.S. Dorsetshire. The provenance of the album is not certain but it seems probable that the original owner was a resident in Bedford during the 1940s which is where the BBC transferred some of its operations and that the autographs were obtained locally. First World War Post Card Album. Album containing 20+ Embroidered card evidentially sent by a soldier from the front, one from Ypres for instance with a simple pencilled message '' Yours ever, Lennard, 11/3/16.'' Over 30 more cards of a 'sentimental' nature depicting individual members of the armed forces in thought about sweethearts or wives at home and vice versa, one card with the pencilled message '' My Dear Gracie, Just a few lines as we are going in the line tomorrow I think & perhaps I shall not be able to write there.'' This card stamped in red as 'passed by the field censor.' A further collection of humorous cards - 'They all like their little bit of red!'' and ''Naughty Netta's knitting knickers for the seat of War''. Together with a range of other contemporary cards featuring French locations, some with images of war damage. A card with a printed poem by Corporal G.E. Attwood, 2nd. London Reg. R.F. - 'Keep Your Head Well Down'. Altogether a poignant reminder and memorial to this conflict and its effects on ordinary people. Estimate £250 - £300 |

Cricketing Autograph Album. Well preserved album containing signatures of team members involved in County Cricket Tournaments in 1954. County teams include the following : Surrey; MCC; Middlesex; Hampshire; Worcestershire; Kent; Warwick; Glamorgan and Lancashire. Among two pages featuring 'Gentlemen / Players' for 1954 are the signatures of Colin Cowdrey, David Sheppard, Trevor Bailey, Tom Graveney and Peter May. Also featured are the signatures of the 1954 team from Pakistan. The autographs were collected by Len Dolding, former Chelsea footballer and Middlesex cricketer; there is a newspaper article about him pasted into the album.
