By the age of fifteen Sir John Everett Millais advised that he should become a student at St. John's Wood Art Schools, where he received a stoically academic training. In 1890 he joined the Royal Academy, and won several awards. Byam Shaw became a Pre- Raphaelite painter, decorator and illustrator and his work has strong echoes of the prevailing Art Nouveau style. His use of unadulterated pigment colours give his paintings a characteristic brilliance and vibrancy, which are often complimented by fantastically inspired compositions and highly skilled figurative portrayals. £15000 - 20000 |

This is probably also the same picture that was shown in his "Memorial Exhibition" (Leicester Galleries, May-June 1947) as Eel Boats at Dinan (cat. no. 51). It can be seen as complimentary to his watercolour Dinan from the Viaduct (also at Leicester Galleries in 1928: cat. no. 2), but with a viewpoint facing the opposite direction, and focusing less on the river, and more on the framing arches of viaduct, bridge and boat masts. We are grateful to Christopher Martin for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. £6000 - 8000 |
