A Decade Ring, possibly 17th Century, the shank comprises ten nuggets, to an oval head, with the letter S depicted, finger size L Decade rings (so called as the shank has ten nuggets) were used in the same way as a Rosary. In 1571 rosaries were forbidden in England and Wales, but decade rings were not mentioned by the Act, and they continued to be made until at least the 18th century. Until the mid 15th century the ring head usually had a saint engraved in the middle, but after Reformation the letter S was used, possibly to represent 'servant' of Christ.
