The Ian Alistair Robertson Collection of Minton Figures Part I (lots 37-51)

The late Ian Robertson spent his life in Alnwick, Northumberland where he ran a successful saleroom for 35 years. Over his lifetime he was an inveterate collector, a member of the Rotary Club for 35 years and a member of Alnwick District Council for 42 years. We are delighted to offer the first part of his collection here; the second part will be offered in the Country House Sale on 26 April. The duels of Pitt and Fox have gone down in history as the archetype of political opposition for more than two centuries; produced thirty years after their deaths, these pieces reflect the popular interest in such an antagonistic pair. Earl Grey is known more for his Great Reform Bill of 1832 rather than the four years he was Prime Minister. Lord Brougham was Queen Caroline's solicitor in her celebrated divorce, as well as being one of the leading supporters of the Great Reform Bill. The Duke of Wellington defeated Britain's arch foes at Waterloo and was Prime Minister for only two years, while Sir Robert Peel is perhaps most famous for creating the Police force, Catholic emancipation and the Repeal of the Corn Laws. William Wilberforce was the Hull MP who formed the Anti-Slavery Society and was responsible for passing the Slavery Act of 1807. The Parliamentary system over the centuries has produced an unparalleled stage for political theatre and this collection reflects some of those great protagonists. With thanks to David A Kerfoot MBE for his assistance with the research of these lots.
