Southgate's Caricature Number 1 the 'Pick-Pocket' Envelope used from London to Cardiff, brg 1840 Pl 1A 1d. grey-black (moderate wear), (SG.AS2), lettered EE, generally clear to large margins, tied by red MC, straight-line 'Fenchurch St.' h/s in black on the obverse, London code 'A' d/s of despatch on the reverse. Cover has been cleaned to remove foxing and stamp has been lifted, repaired and re-affixed to cover, but a superb example of this caricature, one of the finest known. Endorsed on the reverse 'to be returned'. Bodily, Jarvis and Hahn record 19 used examples. This example not recorded by them. (See photo) (S) £800
