HURRICANE; 12 Dec. 1740 EL (professionally rebacked and still attractive) from "[H.M.S.] Experiment, Port Royall Harbour" to John Russell at Deptford shipyard with "4" charge and v. fine arrival Bishop Mark with good long contents; "...29th August we had...such a Hurricane which is impossible to describe. I was in that of 1722 - 90 sailors, ships & sloops lost - it was no more than a common sea breeze [when compared] to this last..."; plus fine 16 Aug. 1749 EL from "Jamaica" to London "p. the Haughton Capt. Read, Q.D.C." charged "4" with v. fine "27/OC" arrival Bishop Mark sent during the 1749-55 suspension of the Packet service, and a battered c.1749 EL from "Brownes Hall In Jamaica" (signed by William Patrick Browne) to London with faint m/s "6"(?) charge and fair Bishop Mark. Feb./June 1760 pair to Edinburgh "p. the Duke Packet" (charged "In 2N") or "p. the Dreadnought Man of War" (charged "In 2N4") - the latter with contents inc. "A Rebellion of the Negroes in St. Marys...hath occasioned a great deal of disturbance & the loss of many lives [so] that Martial Law was declared before it could be quelled" - 1762 EL from "Jamaica" to London "BY the St Michael" charged "5" with similar contents (typed transcript inc. "The Martial Law and Embargo continued here from 26 Jan. to 12 instant and has been worse...than an invasion of French and Spaniards..."!), and 1764/5 pair of ELs from "Westmoreland, Jamaica" to Edinburgh charged "In 10" or "In 1N7") sent by "the Moffatt" or "H.M.S. Jam[aic]a Packet, [Capt.?] Furnel(?)" charged "4" with a very fine scarce small 1st-Type "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP.LRE" mark (Rob.S1, recorded 1766-88; light fold between P and O) nicely placed on the front with fine "25/N)" arrival Bishop Mark on the reverse. FUTURE AUSTRALIAN CONVICT SHIP; 1773/82 ELs from Jamaica to London (4) or to Madeira all with mainly fine to very fine "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LRE" marks (Rob.S1/S2/S4); endorsed by ships "the Rainbow", "Commodore of the Jamaica Fleet" (with enclosed part printed Bill of Exchange for £68-16s-0d), "the Ardent Man of War" (to Madeira and so with initial "4" charge changed to "1N4" for extra outgoing 1/- Packet rate) or "the Lady Juliana, Capt. Sayle" (which ship is thought to be the same one that carried the first women convicts to Australia in 1789), plus one not by named ship but addressed to "Jamaica Coffee House". "DOVER/SHIP LRE" (2 TYPES) COVERS TO G.B. INC. MENTION OF RECENT JAMAICA EARTHQUAKE; 1774/76/80 trio of ELs from "Black River", "Jamaica" or "St. Marys" to London; two endorsed by "the Commerce" or "the Meredith" and all with very fine (2) or partial "DOVER/SHIP LRE" marks; the 1780 cover (full typed transcript) inc. mention of that year's earthquake; "...on the 3rd instant we had a violent shock which threw down several houses but caused no great damage. It is supposed to have been the severest there has been since 1692 when al,l; Port Royal was destroyed...". (3 covers) PHOTO - see page 15. £150

GREENOCK "SHIP" COVER + "DEAL/SHIP LRE" EX JAMAICA/SPANISH TOWN; 17 July 1777 EL from "Jamaica" to "Rothsay [Isle of] Bute" in Scotland charged "3" with a mainly very fine "SHIP" on the front and matching partial "GREENOCK" on the lower flap (Rob.S1; scarce pre-1780) - rare port of arrival for West Indies mail at this early date - and 1787 EL from "Spanish Town" to London "p. OVAL "Ship Lre/[Crown]" PAIR FOR LIVERPOOL/PLYMOUTH + "RETURNED FOR POSTAGE" COVER TO MADEIRA; 1800/01 pair of ELs from "Kingston" to the same London address with faint "LIVERPOOL" ("p. Egyptian") and mainly fine "PLYMOUTH" (p. HMS Rosario") double-oval "Ship Lre/[Crown]" marks on the front; plus remarkable 2 June 1800 EL from "Westmoreland, Jamaica" to Madeira endorsed "Packet" but clearly sent undercover to London and posted there, but should have been prepaid so posted twice; once with "29"-code London "FOREIGN OFFICE" d.s. on the front and endorsed "Returned for 1/8 Postage" on the flap and then with the similar "18"-code d.s. on the flap. RARE EARLY COVERS TO MEXICO/SPAIN ROUTED VIA THE SPANISH CUBA POST OFFICE; Fine 4 Sept. 1808 EL from "Kingston" (filing note "Jamaica") to "Vera Cruz" (Mexico) initially endorsed "P.M. 28"(?) and this then replaced by "[Per] Berg[ati]n Flecha" and charged "2" with a very fine red Havana "YNDIAS" mark on the front; plus 28 May 1818 EL from "Kingston, Jamayca" to Vigo (Spain; redirected on arrival to "Cangas" with red h.s. "R 5") endorsed Fragata India" with a mainly very fine black Havana "ISLAS DE/BARLOVENTO" on the front. Rare pair; early mail from Jamaica to Cuba, Spain or Mexico is seldom seen. SCARCE LONDON "PACKET LETTER" ON COVER RETURNED FROM JAMAICA: 1809 O.H.M.S. entire from London (?) to "His Excellency General Villettes, Lt. Governor, Jamaica" with a fine London "PACKET LETTER" (Rob. P2; early usage) on the front, which is surprisingly scarce on mail from Jamaica. The letter clearly arrived after the departure of the addressee back to England and so was redirected to London & charged "4/-" for a double letter. Rare thus. RED OVAL "Ship Lre/[Crown]/PLYMOUTH DOCK" COVER TO G.B. "PER H.M.S. CRANE"; 22 Nov. 1810 EL (minor toning clear of mark) from "St. Marys, Jamaica" to London "P HMS Crane" charged "1/2" and then "2/7" with an unusually very fine red double-oval "Ship Lre/[Crown]/PLYMOUTH DOCK" (Rob.S2; early use in this distinctive colour which is only recorded 1810-14) nicely placed on the front. RARE GREEN FALMOUTH "JAMAICA/F" D.S. ON COVER TO SCOTLAND; July/Aug. 1814 E (one side-flap removed) from "Port Royal" (pencil note) to Edinburgh charged "2/5" with a very fine green Falmouth "JAMAICA/1 SE 1/1814/F" transit mark (Rob.FP5; early date) unusually on the front slightly overlapped by a boxed Carlisle "Addl/1/2" Scottish Mail Tax mark. STEP-TYPE "SHIP LETTER" MARKS OF HASTINGS & PENZANCE ON MAIL BY SAME SHIP TO G.B.; 1821/22 pair of ELs (latter with some flap-faults & edge wear) from "Hanover [Estate]" or ?Three Mile River to Edinburgh both endorsed "Pr [Ship] Hanover" with a spectacularly fine boxed "HASTINGS/SHIP LETTER" (unusual on Jamaica mail) nicely placed on the front or with a mainly very fine boxed "PENZANCE/SHIP LETTER" on the flap. RARE GREEN FALMOUTH UNDATED "JAMAICA/F" MARK ON "H.M.S. SNAKE" COVER TO SCOTLAND; Attractive 22 March 1838 EL from the Commander of "H.M.S. Snake, Port Royal" (family letter to his father, an Admiral) endorsed "Snake" on the front with a very fine rare undated green Falmouth "JAMAICA/F" udc on the top flap; redirected in Scotland with a partly fine red "COLDSTREAM/PENNY POST" and varied charges. SHIP LETTERS FROM KINGSTON TO THE U.S./EUROPE INC. ONE TO AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING LINE; 1841-54 covers from Kingston to the US inc. 1841/45 trio with "SHIP" marks of NY/Philadelphia (blue)/Alexandria (red), and 1853/4 prepaid pair to Fairhaven/NY via SAVANNAH (2-ring "10", etc.) or direct (v. fine encircled NY "STEAMSHIP/10") - the latter regarding freight to Melbourne addressed to the NY "Agent for the Pioneer Line to Australia" (gold-rush period). Plus 1844/9 pair to Italy sent under cover to London and prepaid from there, and 1863 EL posted from London to Madeira, and 1860 cash-paid 6d-rate env. To GB. (9 covers) £200

Saville" (Agent for Prisoners of War) at "Kingston" ordering Admiral Duckworth in Port Royal harbour to escort some "French POWs embarked on board Merchant Vessels of the present convoy to assist them in navigating them to England.", 1803 local naval order signed by "[Admiral] St. Vincent", 4 1802 local ELs (no postal marks) ref. naval tenders (for stores, etc.), and an attractive 1782 hand-coloured print of "PORT ROYAL". Surprize" charged "10" and then "3/-" with a mainly very fine (for this) double-oval "Ship Letter/[Crown]/JAMAICA" (Foster records from 11 Apr. 1801) and very fine matching "Ship Letter/[Crown]/DEAL" side-by-side and nicely placed on the front. [HMS] Snake" charged "1/-" and then "1/6" with a very fine (for this) double-oval "Ship Letter/[Crown]/JAMAICA" inverted on the front along with Edinburgh arrival c.d.s. and London fine boxed "Addl/1/2" Scottish Mail Tax mark; attractive PHOTO - see page 16. £150

THE VERY RARE MANUSCRIPT "Ship Letter/Jamaica" MARK ON FALMOUTH/JA COVER TO G.B.; June/July 1815 E (one side-flap removed) to Edinburgh "P. Lincoln, Capt. Benson, Q.D.C." with clear Manuscript "Ship Letter/Jamaica" in an oval on the reverse beside a fair black "FALMOUTH/JA" mark, also having a mainly fine step-type "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" and London boxed "Addl/1/2" on the front with c.d.s.'s of London (8 Aug.) and Edinburgh (11 Aug.); there is no Kingston mark so it seems clear that this was the Falmouth (Jamaica) P.O.'s attempt at mimicking the current Kingston oval "Ship Letter/[Crown]/JAMAICA" mark (which we have not recorded on any cover with the "FALMOUTH/JA" mark). Exceptional Manuscript Ship Letter; it is thought that only one other example exists. Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page 8. £750

RARE USAGE OF THE "KINGSTON/SHIP LETTER" C.D.S. ON OUTGOING MAIL (TO G.B.); 10 Mar. 1843 env. (fine gold embossed wafer seal) to London (redirected cash-paid to Scotland) endorsed "By Packet of 6th of March 1843" but clearly too late for that (the endorsement crossed out) and so having a mainly very fine grey-brown "KINGSTON/SHIP LETTER" c.d.s. (just shaved by small opening tear) on the flap. Most unusual; this Ship Letter mark is rare on outgoing mail. PHOTO - see page 16. £150

RARE LATE USAGE BOXED KINGSTON "SHIP LETTER" ON COLOMBIA COVER TO U.S.; 14 Aug. 1872 EL from "Santa Marta" (Colombia) to New York "Y [Ship] California via Jamaica" with a fine "JAMAICA/TRANSIT" and matching rare chamfered box "SHIP LETTER" (Foster SL10, filing fold; few known - earlier than recorded) on the front, matching the "KINGSTON/JAMAICA" c.d.s. across the join on the reverse. This Ship Letter mark is very seldom seen because Ship Letters were little used after 1860 and this mark did not appear until 1872. PHOTO - see page 1. £300
