S.A. des Thermes D'Enghien, mortgage bond for 500 francs, Paris 187[0], no. 3279, attractive piece with vignettes of buildings around border, red and black with pale blue underprint, wth coupons, very fine and scarce. £120-150
The waters of Enghien were discovered in 1766 and became fashionable after Louis XVIII's visit in 1823 for the cure of a leg ulcer. Their popularity peaked when some of the springs were declared of public interest in 1865 and when Princess Mathilde, cousin of Napoleon III, moved to the nearby town of Saint-Gratien in the same period. The springs have again been developed and used for the healing of many ear, nose and throat disorders and for respiratory diseases.
