1644 (2 Jan.) entire letter, addressed "For the right Hono.ble the Lord Fairfex in his Lord:s absence to the Commander in cheefe humbly present this in Yorke" from Sir Francis Fane, second son of Fane, first Earl of Westmorland; this letter, a request for a pass for a kinsman of the writer, emigrating with his son and two servents, to Rotterdam, offers a glimpse of life during the Civil War. Some fox marks but fine and an interesting early letter. Photo £220-250

1738-1846 collection in brown album, thirty-nine entire or entire letters, including 1766 with triangular Government Penny Post, 1815 with "sudbury/56" mileage, 1828 with framed "SHAFTSBURY/5th Cl Post", 1838 with red oval "PAID/at/LEEDS", 1841 with fine red "PAID as/ABERDEEN", a range of Bishop marks, etc., chiefly good to fine £200-300

1839 (5 Dec.) entire letter to London with a superb strike of the Glasgow handstruck "4" (first day of use), on reverse crisp red Glasgow datestamp and London arrival (7.12 1839). The interior bears another name and address, and is endorsed under 1/2oz. (according to the new postage regulations, introduced on 5 Dec., if the weight of the letter did not exceed 1/2oz., 4d. was charged), as it was, presumably, the intention of the sender that it was forwarded by the first recipient). Light filing folds, but clean and most attractive.
A rare and delightful example of the Uniform 4d. Post handstamp, used on the First Day of its introduction. Photo £1,200-1,500

1840-1911, selection of fifty-nine entires, entire letters, part entires or cards, mostly addressed to a firm of Solicitors in Hull, including 1840 (May) entire with red paid tombstone d.s., 1844 (31 May) with green hull c.d.s. on the front, 1845 (11 July) Official with red (Crown)/paid datestamp, 1847 (25 May) entire with fine blue hull/ship-letter datestamp on reverse, 1854 (22 May) entire franked 1d. with superb. leeds "447" spoon cancellation, others with undated circular markings, straight line markings, Uniform Penny Post, etc., a few with adhesives missing £150-200

1841 (25 March) entire to Aberdeen with fine red Isle of Man "p1" on the front, Isle of Man c.d.s. and boxed arrival datestamp on reverse, also 1845 (8 April) printed "abstract for treasurer of northern light-duties, of the receipt and disbursements of light duties, &c" to Edinburgh with fine black Isle of Man "2" handstamp, slightly refolded to improve appearance and light vertical filing folds, fine. 1858 (28 June), deep blue printed "British Association for the Advancement of Sciences/1858" wrapper, addressed to Hull and franked 1d. (defective at foot) with London Inland Section "26" cancellation, on reverse Champion Hill undated circular marking, blue London and black Hull datestamps; fine. The only recorded example of this entire. Photo £150-200

as "The Mud Fog Society for the advancement of everything" in the "Mud Fog" papers (1837-38).

1866 (24 Dec.) a two page letter with blue embossed "hampstead, n.w.", written and signed by Rowland Hill, "My dear Sir, Don't trouble yourself further about the trials (?). The figures, as they originally stood, were taken from a statement made by Lord Elcho in the H. of Commons which I am now assured was incorrect. The real facts of the case cannot be stated, as the information is considered confidential. You will see that I have altered that part of the report. Yours faithfully"; fine and an important letter.
