A TWO BAR QSA MEDAL TO AN OFFICER CASUALTY. A Queens South Africa medal with bars Orange Free State and South Africa 1902. Named to 2/Lt R C L Stapleton-Bretherton. R Fus.M.I. Robert Charles Lucius Stapleton-Bretherton was the second son of F.A. Stapleton-Bretherton and the Hon Mrs S-Bretherton of Lancashire and Fareham in Hants. He was commissioned into the Hants Militia and later served in Africa as an Assistant Inspector of The Gold Coast Constabulary. Born in August 1875 he was educated at The Jesuit College of Windsor. A keen sportsman and a good rider, he was the nephew of Lord Petre. Serving in the Gold Coast Constabulary until April 1900, he was commissioned into the Royal Fusiliers as a 2/Lt. (He held the rank of Captain whilst in the Hants 3rd Battalion.) Serving with the 1st Battalion from June 1900 in Bombay, then in South Africa from December 1901, with the 20th Mounted Infantry under Colonel Dawkins. Operating in the Frankfort District, he was in operations against De Wet. Some fighting took place on Jan 28th, on the following evening the whole column began an attack on a large force of Boers, 25 miles away. The Boers were suprised, but made a determined stand. With about ten men 2/Lt Stapleton-Bretherton rushed forward to attack and, if possible to capture some of the enemy, and was shot through the heart. He is buried on a hillside at Kaffirstad, on the Harrismith-Frankfort road, about 25 miles from the former place. A marble cross and fence mark his grave. See Illustration. £700-1000

Lt Col James Dorgan served in France & Flanders from the 16/11/1914 until 2/1/1915. Then in Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, European Turkey, Islands of the Aegean 12/8/1916 until 16/3/1917. In Gallipoli 25/4/1915 until 8/9/1915. Previously in Egypt from 24/3/1915 till 22/4/1915. Thereafter in Mesopotamia from 13/10/1917 until 31/10/1918. £60-100

AN ARMY CHAPLAINS OBE GROUP OF SIX MEDALS. A first type OBE with HM for 1928, 1914/15 Star, British War & Victory medals, named to Rev. J.J.E. O'Malley Army Chaplains Dept. 1935 Jubilee and 1937 Coronation medals, the whole mounted for wear. Assistant Chaplain-General John James Evans O'Malley OBE was Chaplain to the Forces 2nd Class when he was awarded an OBE in 1929. Also a silver and enamel Army Chaplains, 'In this sign conquer' sweethearts badge. Marlborough Garrison and Sandhurst Rectory during the 1950's and 1960's. £200-300

A CASED CBE AND GOLIATH 'ROYAL OAK INCIDENT WATCH' etc A cased CBE with a miniature medal group consisting of a CBE, China 1900, and Gt War trio. The leather cased Goliath watch by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co, with initials K.D inset. With an original newspaper cutting of the Court Martial of the then Captain of HMS Royal Oak. Kenneth Dewar. V Admiral Bernard Collard, had instructed Captain Dewar there should be no women guests without dancing partners. In Malta Harbour V Admiral Collard berated Captain Dewar because some women were not dancing on several occasions. If you wont bite the Commander organising this I will! Captain Dewar attempted to keep the peace, but V Admiral Collard shoved the bandleader through the guests, shouting it was the worst band he had ever seen. A marine was chastised, nothing anyone could do was alright. Things deteriorated between the R Admiral and the Officers aboard the ship. Letters were written to the Admiralty, the papers got hold of it, Court Martials ensued. Full story as written in the 1963 newspapers are with the lot. With Collard being found guilty, also the executive officer, both left the service. V Admiral Dewar had served at the Dardanelles (2nd I/C HMS Prince of Wales) and later commanded a Monitor in home waters, during the Gt War. After the 'Royal Oak Incident, he received a reprimand, some time later he returned to command Battleships. See His Memoirs, published in 1939. He married Gertrude Stapleton-Bretherton, and had one son. £300-500

DPH served after the Gt War on the China Station including the Gun Boat HMS Bee. In January 1955 he received his highest rank, and shows his entitlement to a Volunteer Reserve Decoration. £100-150

AN EIGHT MEDAL OBE GROUP AND MINIATURES. The eight medal group consisting of an OBE, 1939/45, Africa, France & Germany Stars, Defence & War medals, GSM bar Malaya, also a Republic of Ghana Independence Day medal. The 1st type OBE is unnamed as issued, has the heads of GV and Queen Mary on the obverse. The GSM is unnamed the original having been lost or stolen. A matching set of miniatures, has the bar on the Africa Star, also the bars Malaya, Cyprus and S E Asia 1945-46, though lacks a miniature Ghana medal. Awarded to Colonel Kenneth M J Dewar OBE of the East Anglian Brigade in 1963. He was promoted to Colonel (Queens Brigade) R. Anglian, retired on pay 1968.
