| A GREAT WAR CASUALTY DEVON'S PAIR. British War & Victory Medals named to 15697 Pte W Heale Devon Regt. Pte Wliilam Heale was born in Winkleigh Devon. Educated at Exeter he serving was in the 8th Battalion, when he was Killed in Action on the 20th July 1916. The attack on Highwood was to take place at 03:30 hrs on the 20th. Dead horses from the Secunderbad Cavalry's unsuccessful attack on the 14th July, lay around the steep slope. At first the attack was successful, then hidden German Riflemen and Machine Gunners brought a hail of fire, on to the 20 Officers and 564 men who set out. By 10:00hrs 7 Officers and 153 men had become casualties. A Victoria Cross was won during the attack by 10799 Pte T W H Veale of the 8th Battn, who made repeated attempts to save a wounded officer (Lt Savill). Lying just 50 yards from the German Trenches, after continual attempts alone and with help, succeeded in bringing him nearer in. Returning under fire for a Lewis Gun he acted to give effective covering fire, whilst Lt Duff and the Battalion Chaplain Mr Crosse with Sjt Smith brought Lt Savill to safety.
