| A NORTH SOMERSET YEOMANRY TRIO & DEATH PLAQUE. A 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory medals, awarded to 1224 Pte C C H Mail. N. Som. Yeo. Boxes of issue and medal envelopes also the Record Office slips for the 1914/15 Star and both the Bwm & Victory Medals being awarded. Death Plaque in card envelope of issue and like the medal envelopes addressed to Mr G Mail, 45 Kilver Street, Shepton Mallet. Somerset. The plaque is named to Cyril Clifford Henry Mail. An original postcard photograph of Pte Mail wearing his NSY uniform in 1917, is with the medals. Pte Mail was Killed In Action in the advance of the 6th Cavalry Brigade (to which he was attached 10th Hussars - after the regiment was broken up in April 1918). See the history of the pursuit to Selle by the 6th Brigade, 9th-12th October 1918. The Germans were in retreat when Pte Mail fell on the 9th October aged 23 years. The son of George & Sylvia Mail of 45 Kilver Street, Shepton Mallet. He was buried in Busigny Military Cemetery in France. See Illustration £300-500 |

| A ROYAL NAVY TRIO & LSGC HMS BRISTOL. A 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory medals named to 306110 SPO-Acting Ch Stoker R E Symonds RN. A George V Long Service Good Conduct medal named to 306110 R E Symonds Ch Stoker HMS Bristol. Also Ch Stoker Symonds Certificate of Service for Robert Eli Symonds born 1882 in Dorset, working on a farm before joining the Royal Navy in 1904. He signed up for 12 years though he actually completed a total of 28yrs before retiring under the age limit, from his service in the Royal Navy & Royal Fleet Reserve. He did his service on some famous ships including HMS Hampshire, Hecla, Europa, Azealea, Bristol, Furious, the Steam Yacht Fire Queen, HMS Essex, Spartiate later Fisgard etc. He received chevrons for 1914/15/16/17/18. In receipt of Naval Prize money, he also later specialised in minesweeping duties. Awarded (3) good conduct badges and received VG conduct reports from every posting of his long career. HMS Bristol was the last 'Bristol Class' Cruiser to be launched, of this early 20thC class. (4) With the group are original photographs and marriage certificates and his silver Fobwatch and chain. In original addressed envelope, also two original postcard photographs of Pte Hillier in uniform. The effects of his service in the war caused the early death of Alfred Hillier, succumbing to Pneumonia in 1926. Details of his passing are with the medals. His sons WWII Defence & War medals in box of issue with entitlement slip and grade card etc. His Welcome Home certificate from the Mayor of Bridport at the end of the war. Both addressed to Cyril Hillier, of Dorset. A Great War Memorial Scroll named to Dvr Ernest James Hillier RASC, in its postal case. 'Presented to Sgt H Middleton by Officers and non commissioned officers of the Malmesbury Volunteers 1917. Sjt Middleton appears in Burnley Men in the Gt War survivors list. Though the London Gazette entry for November 14th 1918 records his MM award, stating he is from Maidstone. Harold Middleton went to France 19/12/1914 and discharged 2/2/1919. Also loose with this pair is a Croix de Guerre with 1914/1915 reverse and a miniature group, MM-1914 Star & Bar, Bwm & Victory medals, Croix De Guerre avec palm mounted for wear. The brother ? of Sjt H Middleton and son ? of Pte J Middleton of the East Surreys. The 102 Brigade RFA served firstly with the 34th division at Hill 60, later with the 23rd Division 6th/June /1916 till the 22nd August 1916. Commonwealth War Graves has his number as 50991, though the other details confirm his MM and date of death (also the 102 Brigade). 22nd of July 1916. His grave is in Heilly Station Cemetery at Mericourt L'Abbe. 11.C8. (Somme). £200-250 |
