A 1st BATTN SLI 1914 STAR & BWM CASUALTY PAIR. A 1914 Star and British War medal, named to 9596 Pte A Harrison Som LI. Pte Harrison was KIA 6/7/1915 serving with the 1st Battalion, aged 24. The son of Thomas and Ellen Harrison of Queens Terrace, Wiveliscombe, Somerset. He is buried in Talana Farm Cemetery in Belgium. In this 'minor' action the Battn lost 2/Lt H Webber and had 27 NCO's and men killed. Three Officers and 102 NCO's and men wounded, in the Battalion's last service in the Ypres area. £100-140

A WWII RAF CONDOLENCE SCROLL. A WWII Royal Air Force sent to the widow of Sergeant J F L Wilson of Castle Durham. Sjt James Ferguson Lindsay Wilson a Flight Engineer serving in 106 Sqdn RAF No 612661 was KIA aged 24 years, on the 5th March 1943. The son of James & Mary Wilson of Kirkpatrick Durham. Kirkcudbrightshire. The outer envelope is addressed to his mother Mrs M Wilson. Victoria Road, Kirkpatrick Durham. Castle Douglas. Kirkcudbrightshire. Buried in the Reichwald Forest Military Cemetery, where the largest Cemetery of UK troops etc are gathered together in Germany. The scene of intense fighting in 1945, many RAF graves were formed of Aircrew lost in intensive bombing raids earlier in the war over Germany. £40-60

A GOLD KINGS PRIZE MEDAL DARTMOUTH 1938 An 18ct Gold Kings Medal given to the top Cadet passing out of Dartmouth Naval College in 1938. Weighing 58 grams, with a 45mm diameter in a Royal mint case of issue. GVI bust with Georgivs VI. D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP on the obverse. His Majesty The King's Medal, Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in floral wreath reverse. Awarded to David R L Baven 1938 engraved on the rim. S-Lt David Richard Lee Bevan was lost on HMS Neptune 19th December 1941. The son of Captain Robert Hesketh Bevan and Mrs Margaret Bevan of Heythrop, Oxfordshire, aged 20 years. Commemorated on the Plymouth Memorial HMS Neptune a Leander Class Light Cruiser that was lost near Tripoli in December 1941, whilst leading Force K. She had earlier in the war been on her way to seek and destroy the Graf Spee, arriving to late to take part in the action. On being posted to the Mediterranean in 1941, she was the first ship in that part of the world to signal 'Enemy in Sight', since the Napoleonic Wars. Part of Force K whilst pursuing an Italian Fleet, she and other ships entered a freshly laid Italian minefield. Struck by three separate mine explosions, they attempted to reverse out of the lethal minefield. A fourth mine blew apart her stern and propulsion means, some 50 odd men got off the ship. Five days later a lone survivor was rescued from the liferaft. Out of a total of 767 men, he was the only survivor. Also a cased Kings Trophy Medal NRA in bronze. See Illustration £1000-1200

THE MEDALS OF CAPTAIN R H BEVAN RN. A group of eleven medals awarded to Captain Robert Hesketh Bevan RN, the father of S Lt D R L Bevan RN. 1914/15 Star, British War & Victory medals named to Lt R H Bevan RN. 1939/45, Africa and Pacific Stars, Defence & War medals, unamed as issued. George VI Coronation medal, Greek Order of the Redeemer, Bronze Greek War Cross, with 1914-17 reverse. The group mounted for wear with his cased Stopwatch, named on the reverse. Captain R H Bevan served at Jutland during the Gt War, also on HMS Saucy between the wars he was attached to the Greek and Italian navies. During WWII he commanded HMS Leander, the leader of the Leander Light Cruiser Group. He was also the Commandant of HMS Collingwood, from 1942-45. This after a medical check found he had TB and a damaged lung. Before that he sunk after challenging, the Italian Armed Merchant Cruiser RAMB.1 in February 1941. Calling the unflagged vessel to stop, the Q Ship slowed and trained her guns on HMS Leander. After being fired on Cpt Bevan ordered his main guns to open fire, at 3000 yards. Several salvos hit and set ablaze the Italian Merchant Raider. 103 enemy crew were saved before the stern blew off the munitions loaded ship. The Captain Lt Cmmr Bozetti was sailing off the Maldives and had just began his 'Raider' mission. Later in March 1941 Leander captured the Vichy French ship Charles L.D. again in the Indian Ocean. Again in March 1941 They were part of the force that captured the German supply ship Coburg and freed the POW's from Ketty Brovik a Norwegian Tanker. A copy of a formal portrait of Captain Bevan, is with the medals which are mounted for wear. Cptn Bevan was also an ADC. His Swiss made Stopwatch is in a .925 marked silver case. AN 1839 £5 GOLD PIECE. A Victorian Una and the Lion five pound gold piece dated 1839, by William Wyon. Younghead obverse facing to the right, her hair held by two fillets with nine leaves in the rear fillet. VICTORIA D:G:BRITTANIUM REGINA F:D. Reverse has the crowned figure of the Queen as Una, holding orb and sceptre, leading the British lion with date below. DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS-MDCCCXXXIX. The edge lettering reads DECUS ET TUTAMEN. ANNO REGNI TERTIO. (S.3851; W & R 279). Type as issued in Proof Sets, with matt images on brilliant field. Extremely Fine, but edge knock below bust, light hairlines on both sides and discolouration spot before face. Very Scarce. See Illustration £12000-15000
