IRISH POSTAL HISTORY

1518
THE RARE DUBLIN DOTTED-OVAL FRAMED "T.OFF" [TAKINGS OFF] MARK; 1 Dec. 1795 EL from London to Dublin, redirected to Cork, then (fine "CORK" on the front) to Cove and back ((v. fine "COVE" on the front) to Cork with fine Dublin "DE/5" transit Bishop Mark matching the very rare oval-framed dotted "T.OFF" mark (light fold) on the front; only 3 or 4 examples of this unusual dotted Dublin "T.OFF" mark have been recorded, all on much-travelled Irish covers like this. The phrase "Takings Off" was used within the Post Office at this time for the accounting calculations needed for readdressed mail like this; the "1/6" rate was changed to "2/6" while amounts due from one P.O. were 'taken off' the internal P.O. accounts list and the P.O. to which a letter was forwarded was responsible for collecting all the postage. Rare Postage Due mark. PHOTO - see page 87. £200

OFFICE/P O'CLOCK" d.s., red 1839 "A/LATE MAIL", etc. Rare group showing the Sunday working system for Irish mails in London. (6 covers + 1 front) PHOTO - see page 87. £200

Aug. 1840 usage of the Stereo "A146" 1d Black Mulready envelope (repaired and partly rebacked due to damp damage affecting bottom right of address side) to Somerset cancelled by red MX matching the part Dublin diamond-framed d.s. on the reverse, additionally franked by a 4-margin 1d Black (GG) apparently 'tied' by a fine red Maltese Cross, but in our opinion not the original stamp (although there was certainly a 1d Black on this cover when posted; it must have weighed above half an ounce). Sold 'as is' and not returnable, but still an attractive item. PHOTO - see page 87. £150
