RARE CROMWELLIAN PERIOD POSTAL RATE "3[d]" COVER FROM "CLIFTON" TO LONDON; 22 July 1657 clearly dates EL (small closed tear in flap) from "Robt Milford" at "Clifton" addressed "To my good fiend Mr. Richard Heydon in Hand court in Holborn neare Turnestile" charged "3[d]" at foot, being the very rare Cromwellian charge for a single letter taken above 80 miles (as per 1653 Broadsheet and confirmed in the June 1657 Act. [Also endorsed "£200" on the front, being the addressee's annotation.] The contents thank the addressee for a "box and Mellons & Artichoake" that he had sent and mentions waiting for "a convenient messenger" to send a vellum deed up to London. The earliest Bristol postal rate that we can recall having seen; the nine 1593-1600 Corsini letters had no postal rates and there are very few other pre-1660 letters recorded from Bristol - none having postal rates.
