THE EXTREMELY RARE BANKNOTE PARCELS RATE RED "[Crown]/PAID" DATESTAMP OF LONDON; 28 Apr. 1857 front (right hand edge rebacked to straighten it and similar small repair at foot) sent from London to Spalding prepaid "1/6" (the special banknote-parcel rate - a quarter of letter-post rates with a minimum weight of 6oz - so this package must have weighed 36 ounces!) with two strikes (very fine and fine) of the extremely rare London "PAID" in a Crown datestamp (Jay L172 - P.O. Proof strike dated 1 Jan. 1833 - for 28 & 30 April), which was only used on banknote parcels such as this (they had to contain only the banknotes of the bank to which the parcels were addressed), with a fine green Spalding arrival c.d.s. | THE UNIQUE(?) EXPERIMENTAL 2-LINE "Lombard St/Two py Pt" MARK ON COVER; 10 Apr. 1801 EL (some dusting; interesting contents from publisher John Sewell to engraver Samuel Rawle suggesting an idea for a print of Hogarth's house) with a very fine strike of the unusual "Lombard St./Two-py Pt." mark nicely placed on the front slightly overlapped by a handstruck "2" with a fine red oval Chief Office "4 o'Clock/EV" d.s. (early date) across the join on the reverse. This Lombard St. mark (Jay L498 - recorded by him for this one day only) was only used (at most) for a very few days before the regular oval types of Receiving House marks came into general use; the new Twopenny Post system had only been introduced less than a week before (on 5 April 1801), so this mark had a very brief - presumably Experimental - life. One of the London Local Post's rarest marks. Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page 21. £300 |
