VERY EARLY SMALL LONDON INSPECTOR'S "[Crown]" MARK ON DOUBLE-RATE COVER FROM CHESTER; 15 Oct. 1683 EL from "Chester" to Pall Mall initially charged "3" (single rate) but then charged "6" (double rate) with Inspector's signature "Bebington" alongside and a very fine Handstruck Inspector's "[Crown]" mark (the slightly larger type; very early date) nicely placed on the front. RARE EARLY INSPECTOR's "CROWN" WITH "B" OUTSIDE CIRCLE + V. EARLY UNCHARGED ENVELOPE; 1809 EL (originally with an enclosure) from London to Ludlow initially charged "9[d]" as single with a very fine rare red Inspector's "Crown" mark in circle with "B" at top; few known. Plus remarkable 1804 env. (+ contents originating from "!Berlin"!) to Eton charged only "4[d]" (Single rate) with a p[art red hollow "Star" Inspector's Mark on the front; wrongly charged as a single letter, but maybe the Inspector had never encountered an envelope before - they are very rare indeed used in G.B. before 1820! RARE SQUARE BOXED "LATE FEE" DUPLEX OF LONDON ON COVER; 6 July 1853 local London E franked by an Imperf. 1d Red (close to wide margins but cut into at base) tied by a mainly very fine strike of the rare "38" Duplex with the date portion in a box with squared corners, code "1". [With 2006 pair of Brandon/R.P.S. certificates stating that the cover is genuine or with "faked duplex obliteration" respectively; we agree with Brandon and strongly disagree with the R.P.S. on this occasion.] Very rare Duplex; Parmenter reckons that previous students have wrongly interpreted this Duplex (which he only records from 29 June to 8 Aug. 1853 before its corners were chamfered - in which form it is common lasting from 19 Aug. 1853 until 25 May 1858) as a Late Fee Paid mark; he feels sure that it is a Too Late mark. Either way, only a few examples are known. PHOTO - see page 22. £300

SPECTACULAR UNUSED HENRY ARCHER CHEESEWRIGHT "QUEEN'S HEAD" HORSE-AND-CART DESIGN; Fine c.1870 unused env. with fine printed caricature design of a rural scene with horse, cart & trough beside a "QUEEN'S HEAD" inn-sign (space for a stamp) and dovecote; we are not aware of any used example having been recorded. There is a small "TAC" motif on the cart and a previous owner identified this as drawn by Henry Archer Cheesewright, who was born c.1840 (he was 11 in the 1851 census) and whose father was a "Law Stationer".
