RARE SQUARE BOXED "LATE FEE" DUPLEX OF LONDON ON COVER; 6 July 1853 local London E franked by an Imperf. 1d Red (close to wide margins but cut into at base) tied by a mainly very fine strike of the rare "38" Duplex with the date portion in a box with squared corners, code "1". [With 2006 pair of Brandon/R.P.S. certificates stating that the cover is genuine or with "faked duplex obliteration" respectively; we agree with Brandon and strongly disagree with the R.P.S. on this occasion.] Very rare Duplex; Parmenter reckons that previous students have wrongly interpreted this Duplex (which he only records from 29 June to 8 Aug. 1853 before its corners were chamfered - in which form it is common lasting from 19 Aug. 1853 until 25 May 1858) as a Late Fee Paid mark; he feels sure that it is a Too Late mark.
