| FOWEY - THE EARLIEST RECORDED SHIP LETTER - ENDORSED "Ship Letter to" BESIDE "FOWEY" STRAIGHT-LINE; [6 Mar. 1813] E (some wear to corners - folded in - otherwise fine and attractive; wmk. "1812" and dated from an enclosure) from "Demerary" (confirmed from the Lloyds List of 29 June 1813; she reached Plymouth with the fleet on 23 June) - the letter clearly had large enclosures, but only one remains (an affidavit about court proceedings in "Demerary" and dated "6th March 1813") - addressed to London (28 June 1813 red c.d.s. on flap) and endorsed "P. Ship Spectator"; charged "2 oz 10/8" with a mainly very fine "FOWEY" nicely placed on the front and most unusually boldly endorsed "Ship Letter to", also having a very fine oval-framed London "*SHIP*/[Crown]/LETTER" (Rob.S10; scarce) nearby, which was reserved for mail landed at smaller ports without Ship letter marks. Robertson/Tabeart record no Fowey Ship Letter markings before 1820 when the step-type mark appears, but very little mail was ever landed at this tiny Cornish port, so it is no surprise that pre-1820 Fowey Ship Letters have not previously been recorded. Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page 10. £2,000 |
