Riddell" to Edinburgh (14 June 1837 arrival c.d.s. on reverse) "Per Hercules" with a fair red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/SYDNEY" d.s. on the front (prepaid "6[d]" outgoing Ship Letter rate) beside a very fine green boxed Falmouth "1/2" Scottish mail Tax mark (rare on Australian mail), endorsed "43/4oz" and so charged "£3-11-3"; the GB arrival Ship/India letter has been torn away with part of the flap, nevertheless a very unusual high postal rate. WITH CROWNED OVAL "G.P.O./SYDNEY" D.S., ETC.; 25 Jan. 1835 EL (some toning & wear but complete; long cross-written family letter from Mrs. "S[arah] Orr") from "Erin Cottage" (Parramatta) to Ireland with a fair strike of the small rare "PARRAMATTA/N.S.W." UDC on the front beside a very fine black crowned oval "GENERAL POST OFFICE/*/SYDNEY" d.s. (14 Feb.) and overlapped by a faint red "CORK/PENNY POST" transit mark; there is also a very faint red octagon-boxed "PAID AT/PARRAMATTA" beneath the Sydney d.s.; charged "1/-" and then "1/10" with a partial boxed "INDIA LETTER/RAMSGATE" on the flap; carried by the 'Governor Harcourt' - 149 days. RARE BLACK SYDNEY "FREE" DATESTAMP ON COMPLETE "NSW GAZETTE" NEWSPAPER; Fine complete 7 Dec. 1836 issue of the "N.S.W. GOVERNMENT GAZETTE" (20pp) having an 80% complete strike of the rare "[Crown]/FREE" d.s. of Sydney for 8 Dec. 1836 in one margin; the strike would originally have been intended for the address=wrapper that (as usual) has not survived with the paper. There is also an interesting Government Notice (p.952) ref. tenders for stationery (quills, paper, tape, pencils, etc.) to be supplied. Rare thus. PHOTO - see below. £100

C.D. RIDDELL - N.S.W. COLONIAL TREASURER - PAIR OF ANTI-GOVERNOR BOURKE COVERS TO G.B.; 24/25 Oct. 1837 pair of long ELs (address wrappers with edge faults but with fine lengthy contents) signed below the address and inside by "C.D. Riddell", the N.S.W. Colonial Treasurer from 1830 until 1856, and Governor Bourke's "bete noire", with long contents complaining that Bourke had given him more duties but no more pay. Carried by different ships and each having a mainly very fine black crowned oval "GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY" d.s. (consecutive dates) on the flap (obe overstruck); one with fine red boxed "INDIA LETTER/DOVER", on the reverse, the other with mainly very fine boxed "INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" on the front; addressed to Edinburgh with high postal rates and fine London boxed "1/2" Mail Tax marks. THE 1838 EMBOSSED "GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY/NEW SOUTH WALES" 2d LETTER-SHEET; c.1870 Official reprint of the first postage stamp in the world, the Sydney 2d letter-sheet on plain white paper; the Arms device correctly placed at top centre with heavy embossing - rare in such fine condition as this. This is one of the small number of 1870 reprints that were made officially in Sydney from the original die. The die was officially destroyed in 1898, and is thought to have been sued as a mailbag seal from c.1850 to c.1870. £150

WITH RED BOXED "INDIA LETTER/BRIGHTON"; Attractive 21 June 1839 Missionary EL from "Bathurst" (ref. long drought etc.) to London initially prepaid "1/-" (9d inland rate + 3d outgoing Ship Letter rate) with a mainly very fine red boxed "BATHURST/POST PAID" nicely placed on the front with a very fine red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/SYDNEY" d.s. (27 June) also on the front and a matching black crowned oval Sydney d.s. on the lower flap; there is a scarce bur overstruck boxed "INDIA LETTER/BRIGHTON" on the other flap, charged a further "1/-" (4d India Letter + 8d inland) on arrival. INGOING G.B. COVER TO MISSIONARY SOON TO BE EATEN BY NEW HEBRIDES CANNIBALS; 28 May 1839 EL (one side-flap removed; a hand-written bank-bill for £100 it seems) from London to "Mr. James Harris of Dublin, c/o Mr. Robert Bourne, Sydney, New South Wales" prepaid "8[d]" outward |Ship Letter rate with a very fine red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/LONDON" d.s. on the front, and also having a very fine crowned oval "GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY" d.s. (28 Sept.) on the lower flap. The addressee was soon to leave to become a Missionary in the New Hebrides, but he had the misfortune on 20 Nov. 1839 to be killed by the natives along with John Williams; they were both eaten by cannibals. GAZETTE; Very fine complete 7 Dec. 1849 11-page "New South Wales Government Gazette" (folds to fit album page) with detailed 30 Nov. 1849 G.P.O. Sydney Notice giving a "LIST of Letters [70 in all] detained in consequence of the sea postage required thereon not having been paid..." mostly being G.B. addresses (incl. Derby!) but including some in Hong Kong, San Francisco, Calcutta & Cape Town. Clear evidence that Sydney P.O. needed their "DETAINED/FOR POSTAGE" mark as much as London did. Rare early Sydney P.O. EARLY P.O. NOTICE REF. DETAINED OVERSEAS MAIL TO CHINA, U.S., ETC. IN N.S.W. GAZETTE; Very fine complete 11 Dec. 1849 23-page "New South Wales Government Gazette" (folds to fit album page) with very detailed 30 Nov. 1849 G.P.O. Sydney Notice giving a "LIST of Letters [several hundred in all!] lying in this Office unclaimed, accumulated since the publication of the last list [which was only a month before!]..." including letters addressed not only to Sydney but also to all the main N.S.W. P.O.s as well as a few to New Zealand or to named ships, etc. Clear evidence of the need for Sydney P.O. to have a "CANNOT/BE FOUND" mark. Eventually these unclaimed letters would be opened and returned (where possible) to their senders. Good insight into the P.O. just before the introduction of Postage Stamps (a couple of weeks later) £100

"RED/BLACK STAMPING PAINT", ETC.; Fine and unusual used partly printed 5 Aug. 1856 "General Post Office, Sydney" receipt form for "Stores sent to [Bowenfells]" P.O. (near Lithgow just across the Blue Mountains) offering stocks of all kinds of stationery as well as "PAINT.....Red Stamping/Black Stamping" (for postmarks!) and "[Hand]STAMPS" inc. "Obliterating Stamp", Dated Stamp and [loose] Type", "Registered Stamp", "Too Late Stamp" as well as "Letter Balances", etc. Rare insight into the necessary equipment for an early N.S.W. Post Office. RARE "VIA TORRES STRAITS & BATAVIA" ROUTED COVER FROM SYDNEY AT 6d RATE TO G.B.; 10 Aug. 1863 env. (very minor faults) to Worksop (redirected to Northampton at no extra charge) endorsed "Via 'Hero', Torres Straits & Batavia" and franked by Diadem 6d purple tied by a fair Sydney duplex, reaching Worksop (c.d.s.) on 21 Oct. 1863. Very rare - as little-used - routing, which in this case saved no time compared with the 24 Aug. P&O ship from Sydney that reached Ceylon at the same time! Exhibition Item. MORETON BAY DISTRICT UNDERPAID COVER WITH N.S.W. FRANKING TO VICTORIA; Most unusual 13 Aug. 1857 env. (minor edge wear) from "IPSWICH/N.S.W." (fair c.d.s. across flaps) addressed to Melbourne and so franked for the 6d Intercolonial rate by a Pair & Single of the N.S.W. Imperf. 2d (mainly 3 margins) all tied by mainly fine "87" Ipswich Numerals; the letter was over-weight ("I have enclosed my Journal" note beneath flap) and so was endorsed "Exceeding 1/2 Oz, 1/- to Pay" on the front, but this was crossed out as the addressee could not be found ("T[urn]. O[ver]." at top left of address and note "Mr. Coles left Mr. Freames" on the back) and the letter was (presumably) returned to sender with the charge written on the 'ambulance' R.L.B. envelope. Moreton Bay District underpaid N.S.W. Period mail is rare. PHOTO - see page 11. £200

(recipient's annotations on front well clear of marks & stamp) to "Waverley, Broad Sound, Queensland" franked by DLR 2d Vermilion tied by "PINE CREEK/S.A" c.d.s. having a further fine strike - of the next day - on the reverse, along with 5 other backstamps inc. a fine rare XX-rarity Type 1 "PORT DARWIN N.T/[S.A]" Squared Circle and the even rarer "SOUTHPORT/S.A" c.d.s.
