POSTAL STATIONERY USAGE - LETTER-CARD WITH ORIGINAL PRESSED FLOWER & PHOTO ENCLOSURES HAVING PROFILE PORTRAIT & W.A. "OFFICIALLY SEALED" LABEL; Remarkable 21 Nov. 1913 usage of the Australia 1d Letter-card (Zoological Gardens in Perth photo on reverse) with a small pen-and-ink portrait (of the addressee?) on the front, having a rare printed "WESTERN AUSTRALIA/ OFFICIALLY SEALED" label wrapped round the foot; inside are some original pressed flowers sent home by H.C. Appleby as a Christmas present for his wife, attached around four photos of the writer and his tent, with a Christmas poem alongside. The contents are initialled with Appleby's "H.C.A." monogram, and the card was sent "p. R.M.S. Medina". Unique and fascinating item. PHOTO - see page 88. £300

THE BALANCE OF THE HERBERT GRAVENOR APPLEBY PICTORIAL ENVELOPES ARCHIVE; 1913/14 Appleby decorated hand-coloured envelopes (5) & fronts (2) including a spectacular Kangaroo env. (with a 1d 'Roo (cut into the design at top and with cut perfs. at right) tied by the Newcarnie c.d.s., a front with WA Swan 1d (2) tied by Newcarnie c.d.s.'s with a gloomy Napoleon inscribed "Nap!", and 4 other envs. & 1 front all with stamps removed/replaced but with some superb designs including a scantily-clad siren on a rock (front), a couple kissing in a rowing boat, a ship at sea with its route marked on a twin globe in the sky, and two glamorous girls. Plus 1903 trio of PPCs all from Appleby to his family when he was on an earlier trip abroad, a family photo (showing the artist?), and some ephemera - including a newspaper cutting about (and two printed pictorial cards designed by) Appleby's artist brother, Ernest W. Appleby R.A., who is now recognised as having been a highly talented Victorian Pre-Raphaelite style artist. It is clear that H.G. Appleby (a bank clerk in Hull in 1901 before his move overseas) had some talent and perhaps wished to emulate his brother. Significant group of items. (19 items) PHOTO - see page 88. £200
