MARK; Fine [c.March] 1827 EL from "Hobart Town, Van Diemens Land" to Basingstoke (redirected to Reading) with a partly fine oval-framed "HOBART TOWN/V.D.L." mark on the front with varied rates a partial "BASINGSTOKE/48" lined mileage (known 1824-28) and a partly fine scarce boxed "MISSENT TO/LONDON", also having a partly fine scarce black Rob.S7 downward step-type framed "SHIP LETTER/FALMOUTH" (previously only known for 1834 in this colour) on the flap beside a fair red London arrival c.d.s. S.S. GREAT BRITAIN SHIP LETTER RATE COVER WITH COURIER 4d FRANKING; Attractive 24 Oct. 1854 env. (slight edge wear; mostly affecting reverse) to Scotland endorsed "p. 1st Steam Packet via Melbourne" and spectacularly franked by two cut square 1853 Courier 4d (Plate 1; both with good clear margins on 3 sides; barely shaved at foot) tied by light Launceston "59" numerals, with matching c.d.s. and "1/4" arrival charge alongside, having a fine green boxed "LIVERPOOL/SHIP" d.s. (24 Jan. 1855 ) on the back. Rare example of a double Ship Letter rate cover carried by this famous ship and a most attractive and unusual Courier franking. This was the S.S. Great Britain's last Australian voyage as she was then sent to the Crimean War as a troop-carrier on 7 Mar. 1855. Exhibition Item. VERY EARLY COVER FROM "PORT PHILLIP" TO G.B. VIA SYDNEY WITH "INDIA LETTER/DEAL"; 8 May 1838 EL headed from "Upper Wearibee, Port Phillip" to Exeter and written by "Henry Cumming" (ref. his being unable to return from Port Phillip to the UK before the end of July) endorsed "immediate & important" and "Port Phillip [with date]" on the front but having a superb red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/SE*6/1838/*SYDNEY*" d.s. on the front (with cancelled red m/s "3" - outgoing Ship Letter rate from Sydney) and charged "1/4" in London (25 Jan. 1839 transit c.d.s.) beside a fine red boxed "INDIA LETTER/DEAL" (filing crease). [This is the original of an exact duplicate letter known - illustrations included - of the same date with the "MELBOURNE/N.S.W" UDC endorsed "via Sydney".] Very few pre-1839 covers from the Port Phillip District of N.S.W. RARE UPRATED P. STATIONERY ENV. TO G.B. WITH LONG LETTER REF. THE "WRECK OF THE S.S. ORIZABA", ETC.; 27 Feb. 1905 usage of the 1d Red Swan Postal Stationery env. (some edge wear but attractive; the sender - "J.J.F."- has drawn a black swan on the flap!) uprated with 1d Red + 1/2d Green Swans to G.B. (redirected on arrival to Ireland with superb "DERBY" c.d.s.) all cancelled/tied by fine Fremantle Duplexes. The long and interesting letter starts; "The R.M.S. Orizaba which brought your last letter and your photo was wrecked about 20 miles from Fremantle last Thursday week....The Captain has been deprived of his certificate and I understand he will never be allowed to command a vessel again...", also describing a postcard recently sent around the coast of Australia in a mere 52 days, etc. Rare and fascinating item.
