| 1960 4888cc Thames Trader Pantechnicon Reg. No. 28 COG Chassis No. 510E 53139 Originally fitted with a dropside body the Thames was discovered in the early 1990's bricked up in a West Midlands garage. With just 8,000 miles on it, untouched, never serviced and in pristine condition, 28 COG was a real talking point on the show circuit and featured in Truckstop News in July 1994. Purchased by Marsh & Sons in 2001 and converted, as a tribute to the late Ronald Marsh (founder of the business), in the guise of one of the companies original removals lorries. This required the building of a period specification pantechnicon body with hard wood interior, duck cloth roof and sign written body which has resulted in the most eye catching period piece built to very high standard. Still with just 9,000 original miles and an immaculate original interior, this must be the best of its kind anywhere, the last MOT expired in 2006 and current V5C documentation is supplied, free to enter the London Low Emmission Zone until December 2018 this is the ultimate rolling advert for any business. | Aveling and Porter Class A8 Single Cylinder Traction Engine "Endurance" 8nhp. Works No. 2107. Reg No. BT 938. Built 1885 This very early example of an Aveling and Porter traction engine is in fact the second oldest recorded Class A8 (the oldest being in the Science Museum in South Kensington) and the sixth oldest Aveling and Porter steam engine in preservation and still carries its original wooden front axle. The engine was originally supplied new to George Rooks Esq of Ackworth, Yorkshire and at a later date it was acquired by Matthew G Ripley of Bishops Wilton, Yorkshire when it was allocated its registration number. At some stage in its working life it had its original wrought iron fire box replaced by one of steel which is reported to be still in sound condition with good plate thicknesses recorded. It was purchased by the current owners in 1983 and underwent a period of restoration by the well respected Lincolnshire steam engineer Bernard Smith who carried out many repairs including work to the tender, new firetubes and a full repaint. In more recent times, a crack was discovered in the cylinder block, which was duly removed and sent to the Lloyds approved specialists Cast Iron Welding Services of Coalville, Leicestershire who carried out a comprehensive repair. The block was then refitted by Bernard Smith and thoroughly tested. This charming example of Victorian engineering has formed part of a private collection for the past thirty years and has never been shown in public in their ownership. After a recent successful hydraulic test the engine comes with a current boiler certificate and presents a superb opportunity to acquire one of the earliest traction engines known to be in preservation. Estimate: £75,000 - £85,000 |

Aveling and Porter Class E, 6NHP 10 ton Road Roller Works No.11647 Reg. No. TW 5884 Built October 1926 Single cylinder piston valve (From the collection of the late Jack Joyce) J.L.H. (Jack) Joyce (20th October 1924 - 19th January 2010) The youngest of two farming brothers from North Bedfordshire, Jack Joyce showed an early interest in preserving historic farm machinery. In 1950 he rescued an early International Titan tractor for preservation and this set him on a lifetime of steam preservation. The 10ton Aveling roller seen here today was purchased in the early 1960's and was exhibited at some of the first steam rallies including Woburn Abbey. Following the purchase of an 8 NHP Foster traction engine, Jack's friendship with Philip Bath led to the start of the famous Roxton Park steam rallies where the Aveling was No.3 in the programme for many years. Always a perfectionist, Jack never let an engine go to a rally until he was absolutely sure it was spot on, even if it meant he was last to turn up! This 10 ton roller spent all of its working life in the Eastern Counties and went straight from work to preservation in the mid 1950's to that early preservationist Albert Deans of Baldock before being purchased by Jack Joyce in 1962. As stated above, this engine was rallied locally by Jack for many years however, suffering ill health in his last years, Jack last steamed the engine in 2002 when it was drained down hot and carefully put into dry storage where it has been for the past 11 years. This very original engine is fitted with a scarifier and has always been well maintained. It was fitted with a new firebox and tubeplate in 1983, using thicker plate than original for longer life. It was last hydraulic tested in 1996 to 250psi and last inspected in storage in 2003 where it had a very satisfactory report. The original buff logbook and test reports come with the engine. A great opportunity to purchase a very original and complete roller with good history and provenance. Estimate: £30,000 - £35,000

Fowler Showman's Engine (conversion) "King of the Road" 5 NHP Compound Class DNC Works No.19481 Reg. No. 497 UXF Built 1935 This very attractive engine was built as a class DNC road roller and in 1935 went straight to work in the Isle of Man as "King of the Road". In the early 1990's it was converted, by Graham Whitwell of Stillington, York, to full Showman's specification which included the fitting of a Mather and Platt dynamo. Around this time, the engine had major boiler work carried out including a new firebox. It is fitted with a differential, rubber tyres and having had its gear ratios modified, is said to be very fast on the road with speeds reported of up to 18mph. In preservation, the Fowler has attended many rallies including several visits to the Great Dorset Steam Fair. This engine is in excellent all round condition having passed its hydraulic test this year and is offered for sale with a current boiler certificate. Estimate: £120,000 - £130,000

1938 AUSTIN 16/28 4cylinder diesel TRACTOR 'Austin Diesel Tractor represents an enormous superiority over obsolete forms of farm power', so quotes Austins diesel brochure from the 1930's. Developed along independent lines in France the 45/55 horse power 16/28 offered an increase in horsepower and output to farmers. Austins tractor production was adversely affected by the more cost effective Fordsons and, coupled with a tax on car horsepower, decimated the sales of their large engined cars in Britain. Austins tractor venture eventually came to an end with the advent of WW2. This tractor is fitted with the Austin made geared down starting handle and has benefitted from a re-paint some years ago. A very uncommon tractor and a rare opportunity to purchase one at auction.

1930's FOWLER 4/40 4cylinder diesel CRAWLER TRACTOR Serial No. 21788 Fitted with a rear belt pulley and swinging drawbar this very rare tractor was rebuilt and restored some years ago and, the vendor reports, was last started in December 2012. All of the gears engage and the steering clutches work well. Understood to have been owned new by a Lincolnshire farmer, the previous owner discovered this tractor in a field in Cambridgeshire and subsequently undertook the restoration work. These tractors rarely come to market and this is a great opportunity to acquire an uncommon tractor with good UK provenance.
