FOLLOWER OF SIR EDWARD COLEY BURNE-JONES, Bt, ARA (1833-1898) THE SONG OF SOLOMON Triptych, with text beneath the images, within an associated carved oak frame Central image 65 x 45cm. approx.; Side images 63.5 x 16cm. approx.; Overall size 107 x 113cm. approx. * The verses are from the Vulgate Bible's Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon, or Canticles). Song of Songs has often been interpreted as a parable of the relationship of God and the Church with the human soul, lyrically symbolised as the union of a husband and wife. The protagonists are a woman (identified in one verse as `the Shulamite`) and a man, and the poem suggests a thoughtful, reverential transition from courtship to consummation. It is one of the shortest books in the Bible, consisting of only 117 verses. Its sensuous imagery has inspired artists for hundreds of years and interpretations exist by artists as varied as William Blake and Marc Chagall. ** Central panel split. Needs a clean. £2500-3500

GORDON STEVENSON (1892-1982) PORTRAIT OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865), 16th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES Quarter length, wearing a dark suit and coat, signed and dated 1926, oil on canvas laid on board 66 x 44cm. * Two life masks exist of Lincoln: one by Leonard Volk (1828-1895) from 1860 and another, showing the President bearded, by Clark Mills (1810-1883) from 1865. In correspondence with our consignor in January 2013 and on the basis of a photograph, it is the opinion of Librarian Jane Gastineau at the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection (Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana) that Stevenson modelled this portrait upon Mills' mask. A press cutting in the archives of the Lincoln Financial Foundation appears to illustrate this portrait and notes that it is `an uncommon portrait of Abraham Lincoln, painted by George Stevenson from a life mask of our martyred president`. Provenance: The Swedish American Line ship `Kungsholm`, built in 1953, and then to a second ship of the same name delivered to the company by John Brown in March 1966. In 1978, the ship was acquired by P&O and renamed `Sea Princess`. The painting was removed from the ship when she was bought by P&O. It was at this time that the picture became the property of the vendor's father in law, who was staff manager for P&O. ++ A little associated retouching; needs a light clean £1000-1500

J** CARRINGTON BIRCH (Fl.1950-1969) THE PAMIR, A FLYING P-LINER SAILING SHIP Signed, oil on board 48 x 73cm. * The fate of the Pamir was a tragic tale of poor preparation, haste and incompetence. On 10 August 1957 the Pamir left Buenos Aires with 86 men aboard. The vessel was dangerously overloaded with 3780 tons of grain. Captain Diebitsch had approved the departure, working under intense pressure and time restraints with an untrained crew. On the morning of 21 September 1957 the ship was caught in Hurricane Carrie. Her badly stored cargo forced the vessel to list dangerously to port and she took on copious quantities of water. Lifeboats could not be deployed and the vessel capsized 600 miles west-southwest of the Azores. None of the lifeboats contained any provisions for survival. A nine day search traced just six desperate survivors. Although these lucky few claimed that most of the ship's crew had managed to make it into lifeboats, eighty men had died from hunger and dehydration. ++ Needs a light clean £200-300
