x 3c. red, perf.13.7x14 in the paler shade associated with this stamp, with thick, crinkly gum (which may not be original). Fresh colour and fine appearance. This stamp is centred to the right (also found on the singles and block of four from the top rows of the perf.15 stamps). A good example of one of the most sought-after stamps of Chinese philately. The unsurcharged stamp is the precursor to the very popular revenue surcharge issues.
In 1987, 53 examples were recorded in, The Revenue Surcharges of China 1897. A few others have surfaced in collections since then, including this example. In addition, about twenty examples were discovered in China (though all of these are toned) and two blocks of six were discovered by Spink in 2008
