May) in red on reverse; the face panel with some ageing and small tear at foot, the reverse with one side panel missing. Extremely rare and undoubtedly one of the finest frankings from this period. 1929 (17 Aug.) "Lee" envelope registered from Kuching to London, flown by Imperial Airways, marked "By Air Mail" and "Karachi - London" and franked at 56c., no backstamps. Rare, about 44 letters carried £120-150
Note: Imperial Airways opened their London to Karachi service on March 30th 1929. Mail from Sarawak was carried for the first time in September 1929. The airmail fee was 35 cents per 1/2 ounce in addition to the surface rate of 6 cents plus a registration fee of 15 cents.

Note: S1419 and S1149 landed at Miri on their return flight from Brunei to Bintulu. Both planes flew from Bintulu to Mukah and Sibu on July 2nd and then flew on to Kuching on July 4th. An additional airmail fee of 10 cents per 1/2 ounce was charged in addition to normal postage.
