| Government of British Honduras, partial proof for $2 (4) mounted on card, 1 January 1895, each showing only the black portion of the note and the date and signature, reverses fully printed in variety of colours. Each date and signature is printed in a different colour: black, red, blue and green. On the reverse of the mounting are two handwritten letters dated 6th and 7th February 1895, discussing signature colour for this issue of the $2. Also a large debossed coat of arms for British Honduras on watermarked paper (Pick 10a for type), notes are very fine to extremely fine, a unique group of items, interesting and important (6) £500-700 The following six lots form a complete set, demonstrating one of the checks performed on proposed notes in the early 20th century. Each lot consists of a $1 note which has been cut into three pieces. The left half has been left untouched while the top right was heated with carbolic and the lower right was heated with creosole. A tracing paper rubbing was then performed on these latter two sections. This process was a method of testing colourfastness of various inks, and the ability of the paper to hold its colour. Each of the six lots consists of all three sections of note, plus the two rubbings, all backed on gridded and watermarked paper. Interestingly while all these notes are $1, using the design of 1895, the colours shown are those which were eventually used on the $1, $2, $5, $10, $50 and $100 notes of 1924. |
