(Photo) (plate 15) A 15.8 x 6.8 cm pale green cheque No. 1956 made out to 'Sears Roebuck' [now known as the American department store Sears] for $57. 63 dated 'Dec 15 1969' in Paul Newman's hand in blue biro pen ink signed boldly in full across the lower right corner 'Paul L Newman'. With red cashier PAID stamp to left edge of front of cheque, stamps to reverse, standard hole punches which do not affect the signature and a telephone number not written in Newman's hand. In fine condition. [Newman was one of the few actors who successfully made the transition from 1950s cinema to that of the 1960s and 1970s. His rebellious persona translated well to a subsequent generation. Newman starred in Exodus (1960), The Hustler (1961), Cool Hand Luke (1967),The Towering Inferno (1974) and The Verdict (1982). Envelope bears a 'May 10, 1869, London' postmark and a used 1d red stamp. Double mounted and framed to an overall size of 10 x 8.25". TITANIC COLLECTION MISCELLANEOUS HISTORICAL
A collection of 18 commemorative First Day Covers featuring 17 autographs signed by various individuals associated with RMS Titanic, a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg. Of particular note a 19x11.5cm cover commemorating the 100th Birthday of Edith Haisman signed in fine black ink by Millvina Dean, the youngest individual Titanic survivor, the cover is postmarked 'Southampton Philatelic Counter, 25 Oct '96'. Accompanied by a similar copy of the same cover, with commemorative stamps, signed in blue ink by Edith Haisman (nee Brown), who was 15 years old when she survived the sinking, Edith's father did not survive the sinking and his body, if recovered, was never identified. Separate signed covers also feature additional and duplicate signatures from Millvina Dean and Eleanor Shuman, a fellow survivor. Eva Hart, survivor of the sinking, Hart and her mother were picked up by the rescue ship RMS Carpathia. Margaret Howman, daughter of the Captain of the RMS Carpathia. Commander A. T. Lightoller, grandson of Second Officer and Survivor C. H. Lightoller. Elettro Marconi, daughter of Italian Inventor and father of long distance radio transmission Guglielmo Marconi. Hjordis Ohlsson, granddaughter of Mauritz Nils Martin Adahl who did not survive, having been recovered and buried at sea. William MacQuitty, British Film Producer, noted for his production of the 1958 Rank Organisation / Pinewood Studios film, A Night to Remember, which recreated the story of the sinking of RMS Titanic. Finally Claes-Goran Wetterholm, Titanic Historian and Author. The First day Cover collection is accompanied by a large reproduction copy of the original Daily Mirror newspaper which was published Tuesday, April 16, 1912. Cat. £600+ £250

Two identical red two cent International Civil Aeronautics Conference postage stamps, 1.5x1", each signed in fountain pen, 'Orville Wright'. Stamps are affixed to an off-white 5x3" card. In very good condition, with light toning and two rusty staples to the card which does not affect the stamps, light contrast to the signatures against the red background. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked February 14, 1946, two corresponding rust stains. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction Certificate of Authenticity. Addressed to 'My dear Mr. Rothschild' and signed at the close 'Yrs very sincerely Albert Edward' then supposedly only the Prince of Wales, prior to his accession. Reads in full "many thanks for your letter after the beautiful box of French sugar plum[b]s you have been kind enough to bring once from Paris for me - I have given the box to the Princess who was very much gratified by it. If at any time you like to call here either at 11.30 or 3 in the afternoon, or take the chance at finding me at home. I shall be delighted to see you - as I suppose you will now stay in London. Hoping that your brother is well. Believe me."Three mailing folds which do not affect the signature.
