c.1839 (March 24) Note written by Rowland Hill from Hampstead to Messrs Nichols, drawing their attention to an error (corrected in the copy originally enclosed) in printing his letter to the Treasury; Hill suggests the unissued copies should be altered with a pen. Also an 1837 free front posted from Shropshire signed by Hill, and pieces signed by Queen Victoria or James Chalmers, with a reprint of an 1839 Chalmers essay. (5). £250-300

1840 Eight page pamphlet "Only Correct Edition of the Penny Postage Act. The New Act for Reducing the Postage on all letters to a Uniform Rate of One Penny", published by Foster and Hextall, 11 Catherine Street, Strand and printed by Ravenscroft Brothers of 18 Tooks Court, Chancery Lane, originally sold for one penny. The front cover with edge faults, laid down on paper, the six page contents fine. The only example we have recorded of this rare pamphlet. £180-220

1898 (Dec) Small size (193x122mm) Post Office Notice "Penny Postage To India and the undermentioned British Colonies and Protectorates" announcing the introduction of Imperial Penny Postage to 36 colonies, commencing on Christmas day. 1843 (June 6) Entire letter written by S.B Reeves, formerly a Lieutenant in the Royal Marines, to the Earl of Haddington at the Admiralty in London, with a 1d red (four margins) cancelled by a central Maltese Cross, backstamped with the very scarce "DOUGLAS IM / 6 / 1843" skeleton datestamp (with the month omitted). Reeves requests a cadetship for his 13 year old son in the Royal Marines, and includes details of his own service - "My first, best and greatest friend was Lord Nelson, the last was Sir Thomas Hardy, and I believe I am the only Commissioned Officer left who had the honor of serving near the person of the Great Lord Nelson on the Quarter deck of the Victory at the memorable Battle off Trafalgar where I was severely wounded".
