London "Tempy. Office" Cancellations. The Michael Goodman collection comprising 1935-44 covers (47) and pieces (23) with machine cancels inscribed "BATT." (21), "BATT, No 2" (7), "PADD" (7), "S.E" (4) or "S.W" (26); "S.W" single circle, double circle and rubber (2) datestamps; and "Padd" rubber datestamp, also an S.W Tempy P.O bag label. Also 1820-23 entire letter and a front with "One Penny To Pay" handstamp of Bagshot. (16). £100-120

1840 (May 16) O.H.M.S Wrapper from the Commander in Chiefs Office, posted unpaid at Charing Cross with "4" charge mark in black (Jay 626, first used by the London Local Post in 1835). A few minor edge faults, mainly fine, an uncommon use of this "4" as a double rate charge mark in the Uniform Penny Post period. £80-100

Handstamped superb boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE 3d" with a circular "St. Bg 2A" charge mark. 1870 Cover from Sydney to London "via Brindisi" franked N.S.W 1/-, with boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED / VIA BRINDISI" applied at Sydney and boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE" of London with manuscript 6d charge. This handstamp without the charge included was used on overweight mail, where the charge was therefore more than the usual 3d.
