c.1801 Entire letter written and signed by M. Elphinstone whilst Secretary at Poona, to John Adam in Calcutta, backstamped fine intaglio "B BAY / P. NOT / PAID" and oval G.P.O / JULY 11 / BSPS" of Calcutta (Giles type 11) with manuscript 2a rate. Elphinstone was appointed Secretary at Poona in 1801, becoming Resident of Poona 1810-16 and Governor of Bombay 1819-27. John Adam was secretary to the Marquis of Hastings and served as Governor-General of India in 1823. Fine and scarce, this intaglio Bombay handstamp unrecorded by Hammond Giles. The 2c sheet with some split perfs resulting in the lower left block of four and upper right vertical pair being separated from the sheet and faults to a few edge stamps; the 10c sheet with a few split vertical perfs and faults to the lower right corner stamp.
