| A Minaudière, by Van Cleef & Arpels, retailed by Asprey, circa 1940, the oblong outer case contains several compartments for powder, lipstick etc., with rose gold and ruby embellishments, marked in several places 'VCA' and 'STYPTOR', with a black outer carrying case marked 'ASPREY', measures 15.3cm by 12cm Styptor, an alloy of silver and pewter, was used in the late 1930's and 1940's. The inspiration for the Minaudière, one of Van Cleef and Arpel's notable contributions to the history of jewellery design, allegedly came from a meeting between Frances Gould and Charles Arpels. Gould, having left the house in a hurry, put her make-up etc into a metal Lucky Strike metal cigarette case - the Minaudière was born! (Minaudière - from the verb to simper). £1000 - 1500 |
