Military and Colonial Life
An extensive collection of material in four albums giving an interesting insight into the military and colonial life of Lt.Col. Cecil E.P. Craven [1899 - 1988], of the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. The eldest son of Mr and Mrs P.E. Craven of Salisbury, Rhodesia, he was born in Salisbury Prison for his own protection during the Matebele uprising. Running away from Rhodesia in 1917 to join the British Army, he was Commissioned into the Artists Rifles. After WWI, he resigned his Commission to go to Sandhurst, he was then Commissioned into the QORWKR and posted to India where he married Sheila Noreen Burke of Bangalore. The albums comprise;
1) an album of ephemera and postcards, commencing with a telegraph from Cecil J. Rhodes to Percival Craven (dated 189? ) stating 'will have much pleasure stand godfather your son', as well as a 1 page a.l.s. from Rhodes to Mrs Craven (1900) enclosing a £50 cheque for his godchild. Also includes a Bangalore Hunt Hound List, RMC officer lists, postcards and ephemera from Salisbury, Rhodesia, QORWKR Christmas cards, Bangalore race cards, Rawalpindi Greyhound Assoc. card, etc., cloth bound
2) an album dated 1927, containing approx 430 photographs including some photographic postcards, subjects include, early tanks, shipping, ?WWI and later military, Bangalore, India, Indian packs of hounds, sailing, rowing, football, a signed photograph of the Maharaja and cricketer Ranjitsinhji (1924), Rhodesia, aerial photographs, Indian ceremonies, family groups, etc., cloth bound
3) an album of press cuttings, predominantly illustrated, relating to The Queens Own Regiment, 1920s to 1931, including military insignia, officers and men of the regiment, regimental sporting teams including running, boxing, hockey, cricket, shooting, football, rugby, etc. cloth bound
